Calculating Acreage

The legal descriptions are read left to right like so:

  • E½NE¼ of Section 32 = "the East half of the Northeast quarter of Section 32"
  • E½SW¼SE¼ of Section 29 = "the East half of the Southwest quarter of the Southeast quarter of Section 29"

Plotting this to a map and calculating acreage, however, is done backwards. First look-up the township and range on a topographic map or other suitable source, and locate the referenced section. The sections are one square mile, which is 640 acres. Once you have located the section, divide it up as indicated in the legal description, working right to left. For the above example, E½NE¼ of Section 32 you would first mark off the Northeast quarter of section 32. This is 160 acres. Next mark off the East half of that quarter and you have an 80 acre plot. Most homesteads are made up of 40 acre squares and/or 80 acre rectangles adding up to 160 acres total.
